Opening
The regular meeting of the Optimist Club of Red Deer was called to order at 6:30 pm on 7 November 2017 at the ABC Family Restaurant by Co- Pres. Norm Cooper.

New Business
Darcy Ouellet from the Outreach Centre was guest speaker. He spoke about several programs sponsored by the Outreach Centre.

- Tools for Schools, an ongoing program where backpacks full of school supplies are given to students in need. Program supports Rocky, Ponoka, Olds and other school districts east of Red Deer. Record year 2200 students helped.

- Adopt a Family at Christmas time. This is a collition of several agencies. Walmart Gift cards are used instead of handing out food and gifts. Use Wal-Mart because you can t buy liquor, gas or cigarettes with them.

LG Heather Osborne: Presented pins to Co-Presidents Norman Cooper and Darryl Sim for bringing in new Members.

Past Distinguished Governor Edie Harris presented Darryl Sim with a jersey for bringing in five new members during her year as Governor. She apologized to Darryl for not presenting the jersey during her year. During Edie’s year the District was Net 267 members. Edie also gave the Club her Distinguished Governor’s patch to be placed on our Club Banner.

Neil Walls talked about the Optimist Chiefs, the AAA Midget Hockey team that our Club has sponsored for many years. They are playing Canada’s Ladies Olympic Hockey Team at the Centrium on the 25 November at 7:00 PM. Suggestion was made that we attend this game. Tickets are available on line for $10.00 under Women’s Olympic Hockey team vs. Red Deer Optimist Chiefs. Rick Preece has further info.
Darryl Sim contacted the Christmas Bureau re a donation; the Bureau requested instead of a donation that we supply volunteers for the following:

Dec 1 “Stuff a Bus Day” 12:00 – 2:30 pm, 2:30-5:00 pm, 5:00 to 7:00 pm, 7:00 to 9:00 pm 3 volunteers for each shift

Dec 2 “Stuff a Bus Day” 11:30 am to 1:30 pm, 1:30 to 2:30 PM. Three volunteers required for each shift.

December 1 and 2 you basically take in money, gifts, etc. Held at Parkland Mall (by the old Safeway store).

December 20 “Hamper Day”. 11:30 – 2:00 PM Giving people rides home or delivering hampers to people.

10 volunteers needed. Held at Christmas Bureau Bay 15, 7428 49 Ave. North end of Cosmos Bottle Depot strip mall. Please respond to Ken W, Darryl S. of Norm C. urgently.

Ken Williamson discussed the passing of Bill Woof. Bill was a great supported of our Saluted to Youth Dinner for many many years. His Funeral is a Crossroads Church Thursday at 1:00 pm.

Edie Harris Christmas Party to be held at Eastview Community Hall December 19. Committee Jean Cadorette, Rick Preece, Randy Trevors, Edie Harris.

There will be two bottles of wine on each table. (One of each colour). $10.00 gift exchange. Cost will be $35.00 per person with the Club picking up the balance.

Edie moved: The cost of the Christmas Party will be $35.00 per person with the Club picking up any extra cost. Seconded by Heather Osborne. CARRIED

Co-Pres. Norm Cooper stated that he and Essay Chair Dave Grabowski met with personal regarding the upcoming Essay contest and will be meeting with Lindsay Thurber.


Ken Williamson reported that the Bike Program had given away 276 bikes so far this year.

Co-President Darryl reported on the committees and stated that they should be meeting.

Salute to Youth Dinner committee was formed, Chad Cooper, Susan Derbyshire, Darryl Sim. Norm Cooper, and Guy Gibson.

Doug Weisbord moved that we donated $750.00 to Tools for Schools as budgeted. Seconded by Chad Cooper. CARRIED

Sgt at Arms John Verbitsky fined various sinners in the Club and raised $11.25. The “Other” pot raised $18.00

Meeting was adjourned at 8:30 pm by Co-Pres Norm Cooper.

The next general meeting will be at 12:00 Noon on November 21, 2017, at ABC Family Restaurant, Red Deer.
